Why we may show these pictures

Plain words version: this is a museum and a work of commentary. Showing a small picture inside an article that is about that picture, telling its history and naming its maker, is the classic case of fair use in the United States: commentary and criticism about a cultural work, using only as much as the story needs.

That is why every picture here is small (never wider than 350 pixels), why it always appears inside its own story, and why the creator is credited and linked on the same page. We are not a stock library and we do not compete with the creators; we point at their work and talk about why it mattered.

Fair use is a judgment, not a force field, and we hold it humbly. If a creator or rights holder disagrees about their own work, their word settles it here: one email to the takedown page and the entry comes down, no argument.

The text of this museum is ours. The memes are theirs. The stories belong to everyone who lived them.
